The Kronos Interference eBook Edward Miller JB Manas

If you had access to a time machine, you'd probably think long and hard about undoing the holocaust. Jacob Newman certainly does, partly because of his family history.

But it turns out that changing history isn't so simple, as Jacob learns. The Kronos Interference has a pretty wide scope and moves quickly through a lot of scenes as Jacob learns what he has really gotten into. The middle third of the book, spent in the past, is by far the best.

Author Edward Miller relies a little too heavily on scientists telling Jacob "it's too complicated, you'll never understand" as a way of glossing over the details of time travel in his universe. It's a little frustrating at times but I can understand that the alternatives might be worse.

The ending wraps things up a little too neatly but doesn't make the book less enjoyable. It was great in the middle and good enough the rest of the time. Maybe I could be talked into 3.5 stars.

The Kronos Interference...Fascinating and Imaginative...Original and Inventive; is highly enjoyable to read. Powerful writing and most interesting subject matter and believable characters. I give this book 4 stars but it might deserve 5.

~lance knight
Well written, excellent characters, got a little out there on the ending but I heartily recommend, finished in one sitting
Very good story, absolutely excellent.the story flowed ,kept you in it and excited to see where it was going.a very enjoyable read to the end.
Firstly the syntax and style of writing is very easy on the eye - well done.
WARNING - the next few sentences may include a spoiler.

The book started off well and being a bit of a Sci-fi fan I was quite satisfied with the introduction, the book then moved, I think, off topic and got into the plight of the Jews in the Second World War with a Masonic touch and finished off with almost a "New Age" ending.
Overall it was an Enjoyable read.
I picked this up at the recommendation of one of the author's co-workers, whom I know. I'm an avid reader of all kinds of fiction, including science fiction.

First, the good

It's a brisk read. The (initial) story line will draw you in, with a mysterious machine discovered at the depths of the ocean and indications of time travel. Character development is good, which is an unexpectedly pleasant treat in a first novel. It does flow fairly well; again, that's something one doesn't always expect in an early novel. Some of the alternate history threads were well-thought-out, and I actually would have enjoyed more depth to them. I found the main character believable and sympathetic; I was definitely rooting for him all the way.

Now, the bad. There may be some mild spoiler-like events, but nothing overt

Time travel is tough, and this novel demonstrates exactly why it's so hard to do it well. The authors, frankly, do not. Their attempt to address some of the intricacies are, simply, to avoid them. That can kind of work when the rest of the story is pretty compelling, but here it just makes the treatment that much more superficial. I do appreciate that they tackle the old "the first thing anyone who got a hold of time travel would do is go back and kill Hitler" sci-fi/time-travel conundrum.

The overall story, especially once you've digested the ending, really seems like they started with an end concept + "kill Hitler" and worked to fill in the holes. That's fine, but at times it lead to an unusual mix of complete predictability (and I'm one of those types who does NOT try to figure out where stories are going), as well as lots of plot holes and inconsistencies. Why, exactly, are these super-beings doing any of this? Why are they conning the main character into... assassinating... not assassinating... Hitler? Note to authors please pass your outline by people who aren't your friends or family, and can possess a critical eye.

The novel's finish ends up being terribly disappointing, an odd mix of deus ex machina, incomprehensible motivation, and Contact. It was confusing, rushed, trite, and contained several unapologetic sequel setups.

My final complaint - and this is minor - speaks to their fiction inexperience, and their desire to paint backward from their mind's eye. Virtually all of the descriptions read like literal descriptions of movie sets or video game scenes. This makes the imagery seem really two-dimensional, and makes the suspension of disbelief much more difficult. Whether it's scenery, characters, actions... it all just reads really "straightforward" and not necessarily in a pleasant way.

Final word if the novel sounds interesting, buy it and read it. You won't regret that. If you're not sure, go ahead and skip it - you won't regret that either. I will be keeping my eye on the authors, because I think with some practice and good direction from editors and other unbiased critical eyes will lead to some good stuff from them in the (wait for it) future.
I enjoy alt history novels and this one starts out pretty strong. The premise that trying to right a wrong and thereby opening a pandoras box of issues is entertaining. The last quarter of the book became way to metaphsyical for me however. Overall pretty good read
..
I think I'm being a little charitable here as the story hung together and was well written as far as it went. The adventure was fun and the time twists were interesting, but the author just didn't know how to finish up the story so he brings in a bunch of super beings who act like a bunch of bored angels squabbling among each other.
