In the Foreign Legion Erwin Rosen 9781178246377 Books
Most of the book is a detailed description of daily life in late-1800s' life in the Legion. The recurring theme is how much work the men do for five centimes a day.The author does not recount any incidents where he was under fire, so this is not a book for anyone expecting a war novel. It makes for an interesting counterpoint to "Beau Geste"'s romantic view of the Legion.
In the last chapter, it becomes a rant against the Legion, framing those who signed the contract as victims forced to do so under false pretenses. He also refers to the armies of the US and UK as mercenaries, without any explanation of his accusation.
All in all, a mixed bag of a read.

In the Foreign Legion Erwin Rosen 9781178246377 Books Reviews
Although this dates back to 1905, it satisfied a lot of my curiosity about the philosophies and regimes that the Legion operates on and why men chose to join.
The book itself may have been great; I wouldn't know as I was unable to read it - appears the book was photocopied for the kindle version. Very displeased; I would not recommend anyone making this purchase.
Tough review of the old legion. No doubt truthful.
Great book. I really enjoyed the historical side of what everyday life was like in the Legion. I found it very interesting.
When. bought this book I thought that it was an addition to "In the French Foreign Legion." It was not, just the same book. The trouble with this book is that the pages are copies photos of the original book. They are yellowed, difficult to read and if it were free, it would not be worth it. I strongly recommend that you NOT buy this book.
Author had a great writing style and was really able to paint a vivid picture of life in the Legion in the early 1900s. Any current or former grunt would appreciate this book.
I had none of the problems that were mentioned on the scanned edition. Mine appered to be degitally redone. This was just a candid look into the Legion from a German recruited over 100 years ago. I always enjoy reading first hand accounts for the perspective they offer on times past. In this case, it's a real eye opener on the trials that used to be part of normal life. We are such oversensative whiners today! The book dragged at times, but nothing compared to the life that the author led while in the Legion.
